ARRL ANNOUNCES NEW PACKET RADIO BOOK

A new book, covering high-speed and other advanced packet radio techniques,
has been published by The American Radio Relay League. Packet: Speed, More
Speed and Applications is intended for experienced packet operators who want
to stretch their wings. Although it is not a beginner's book, several topics
may interest newcomers to packet radio.

The book brings together a wide range of articles from ARRL Computer
Networking Conference Proceedings, the TAPR Packet Status Register, QST, QEX
and The ARRL Handbook. Nearly half of the articles have been updated by
their authors for this book. Chapter 1 provides a solid foundation for 9600
bits/s work in James Miller's "The Shape of Bits to Come." The "9600 Packet
Handbook" presents hands-on amateur advice. For those who want to break into
9600 gradually, there's a review of commercially made modems that work at
both 1200 and 9600 bits/s.

Chapter 2 moves to still higher speeds. The discussion centers around the
WA4DSY 56 kbits/s modem and its application in local systems. The chapter
ends with the Elmore/Rowett 2 Mbits/s (that's megabits per second) 10-GHz
data link.

Chapter 3 presents several projects, including a pacsat modem and a PSK modem
interface for the KAM multimode controller.

Chapter 4 discusses several state-of-the-art packet techniques:
mapping the positions of persons, balloons, ships, RVs and more via packet
    interfaced global-positioning receivers or LORAN-C
tracking the flow of messages through the packet network
exchanging packets via meteor scatter propagation
  future link-layer protocols

Chapter 5 describes equipment and sources for medium and high-speed packet
work. It also includes a TCP/IP command reference courtesy of Ian Wade's NOS
Intro. There's a lot to see, learn and do with packet. The information in
this book was collected from many sources to provide a well rounded tour
through current-and future-packet technologies and activities.

The American Radio Relay League, Inc., is the membership association of
Amateur Radio operators in the US. Copies of the book (ARRL order no. 4955)
are available from Amateur Radio dealers or ARRL Publication Sales, 225 Main
